About this course

Great ideas don’t always start with solutions. They often start with noticing something that could work better, and getting curious about why.

In this course, you’ll learn a practical approach to product discovery: how to explore a problem from a user’s perspective, look beneath what you first notice, question your assumptions, identify opportunities, and generate different ways to respond.

Throughout the course, you’ll build a case study (for TikTok, yay!). You’ll also think from the point of view of familiar products and services, from Spotify to Netflix to Starbucks, to diversely understand how the same approaches can be applied in the real world.

By the end, you won’t just have an idea, you’ll be able to show the thinking that led you there.

What you'll do

Module 1: Get Curious About the Problem Start with a problem, explore it from the user’s perspective, and look beneath what you first notice to uncover a deeper user need. Output: a framed starting problem, user understanding, and deeper user need

Module 2: Find the Opportunity Question your assumptions, turn what you’ve learned into insights and “How Might We” questions, and compare different opportunities to choose where to focus. Output: key questions, an insight, possible opportunities, and one chosen opportunity

Module 3: Generate Better Ideas Look beyond the obvious for inspiration, use what you find to generate multiple possibilities, and compare your strongest ideas to choose one direction worth exploring. Output: sources of inspiration, a range of possible ideas, and one final idea

What you'll leave with

By the end of the course, you’ll have created your own 9-piece Product Discovery Mosaic, a record of how your thinking developed from an initial problem to a final idea.

Your Mosaic will bring together your starting problem, understanding of the user, deeper user need, questions, insight and opportunities, chosen opportunity, inspiration, possible ideas, and final idea.

More importantly, you’ll leave with a repeatable way of thinking that you can use whenever you’re faced with a problem and want to develop thoughtful, meaningful ideas, whether for a future product, project, business idea, or innovation challenge.

Who is this for

This course is designed for high-school students who are curious about how ideas, products, and experiences are created.

You don’t need any previous experience in product design, technology, business, or innovation. You also don’t need to consider yourself “creative.” The course is designed to help you practice the process of getting curious, looking at problems differently, and generating possibilities.

It’s a good fit for students interested in innovation, entrepreneurship, technology, design, business, or simply learning a new way to solve problems!
