About this course

This course is an introduction to electronics through the lens of building, testing, and improving real systems. You will explore how circuits carry signals, how devices sense and respond to their surroundings, and how simple components can be combined to create something purposeful.

As the course progresses, you will move from foundational circuit concepts to projects that bring together sensing, computation, and signal analysis. Along the way, you will practice an essential part of design thinking: learning by making, testing, troubleshooting, and refining until your system works the way you want it to.

What you'll do

Here are some of the actual activities you will do in this course:

Build and simulate circuits in Falstad and TinkerCAD

Debug your circuits using a multimeter to measure voltage and current

Program an Arduino to control LEDs and sensors in TinkerCAD

Record and process audio in Python

Analyze the frequency response of analog circuits using Python

What you'll leave with

You will come out of this course with:

A completed LED circuit in TinkerCAD, along with a short technical report including circuit diagrams, resistor calculations, and measured or simulated voltage and current values

A working Python program that records a passphrase, processes audio, and performs similarity matching to unlock a biometric voice lock

A programmed microcontroller system connected to at least one sensor and output component, with organized code, a wiring diagram, and a demonstration of how the system responds to environmental inputs in TinkerCAD

A designed and tested analog filter circuit in Falstad that isolates a target sound, supported by Python-generated plots and a concise explanation of how the filter reduces noise

A Python script that detects AM vs FM signals and demodulates them into a playable audio file, along with example input signals and a short explanation of how the classification and decoding work

Who is this for

This course is for students who are curious about electronics, engineering, or STEM more broadly and want a practical introduction to designing simple electronic systems.

A few soft prerequisites:

Familiarity with algebra and trigonometry will help, but the course is designed to keep the focus on core ideas and intuition

Some coding experience may be useful, but it is not required. Projects include guidance and example code throughout
